- According to Vacca and Vacca (2008), it is important for the graphic organizers to reflect the text patterns; therefore, this organizer should be used for texts that compare and contrast things, such as a text that discusses the differences between isosceles triangles and isosceles trapezoids.
- Miller and Veatch (2011) also suggest using this type of organizer with text that includes many details and facts, which can help students more easily see the similarities and differences.
- A simple variation is the Venn Diagram. However, the Venn diagram is designed to compare and contrast only two organisms or objects and is limited in the amount of information that can be compared and contrasted (Miller and Veatch, 2011).
- Below is a general outline for a compare/contrast matrix organizer.
Math Example
Use the compare/contrast matrix to organize the similarities and differences between different shapes as a preview to a lesson.

Science Example
Use the compare/contrast matrix to help students classify different animal examples into groups.

The above video shows a simple matrix in which an x indicates whether the feature or characteristic is present or not. It also explains the important components of a compare/contrast matrix. This includes determining what to compare so that the matrix is more focused.

The above shows how to compare and contrast different things, including key words to look for. It also explains what comparing and contrasting is used for and why it is useful. Presenters show how to use two different examples as well.

Writing Component
- The compare/contrast matrix organizer is an effective way to "draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research," as noted by the middle school common core writing standard.
- Especially when using the matrix, students can organize their findings visually, so that comparing and contrasting is much quicker. In fact, this strategy is often used to help organize ideas before students write something such as a compare and contrast essay.
- Not only does this strategy help students organize before writing, but it also helps students to analyze similarities and differences for a deeper understanding before writing (Robb, 2003).
